In October 2023, Fairwork and REPOA in Tanzania marked a significant milestone with the launch of its second report on working conditions in Tanzania’s rapidly growing platform economy. Hosted at REPOA, the event convened policymakers, digital platform operators, researchers, workers’ representatives, development partners, and other stakeholders to examine the opportunities and challenges shaping the country’s evolving digital labour market.
The discussions remain highly relevant today. An expert panel explored critical issues including fair pay, working conditions, workers’ rights, and the policy and regulatory environment needed to support an inclusive and sustainable platform / gig economy. As digital labour continues to expand in Tanzania, the report’s evidence and recommendations continue to provide valuable insights for policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers working to ensure that technological innovation translates into decent work and shared economic opportunities.
